Kiwi Kai

Welcome to the Kiwiana Chronicles at Black Sands Immigration Consulting! We’re diving headfirst into the wonderful world of Kiwi culture. When you’re new to a country, even the little things can be a puzzle.

New Zealand has its fair share of quirky charms, from our Māori culture, unique slang and iconic eats to pop culture moments that Kiwis hold dear not to mention the hidden gems where locals spend their free time.

Kicking off our series, we’re exploring the eccentric and delicious Kai you might encounter in New Zealand. Get ready for a tasty adventure!

Firstly, 'Kai' is Te Reo Māori for food, and you’ll often hear food in New Zealand referred to as such. Some different foods you may come across include:

Pavlova: While Kiwis and Australians constantly argue over which nation this dessert belongs to, we’re claiming it as a good Kiwi treat. Often served around Christmas, it’s a meringue-based dessert that’s sure to sweeten your holiday season.

Chip Butty: A Kiwi favorite. When you have your hot fish and chips, simply butter some white bread, pop a line of hot chips inside, and smother it in tomato sauce. Voilà, you have a chip butty!

Marmite: A dark, black yeasty spread not to be mistaken with Vegemite from across the ditch. Best eaten on toast with loads of butter and just the tiniest bit of Marmite—beware, this is strong stuff! (Also good in a sandwich with ready salted chips)

Hangi: A traditional Māori method of cooking where food is slow-cooked in an underground pit oven. Expect a smoky, earthy flavor that’s unlike anything else.

L&P: Short for Lemon & Paeroa, this is a unique soft drink that’s as Kiwi as it gets. Perfect for quenching your thirst on a hot summer’s day.

Pineapple Lumps: These chocolate-coated pineapple-flavored candies are a beloved Kiwi treat. They’re sweet, chewy, and a bit quirky, just like New Zealand itself.

Anything from your neighborhood bakery- from meat pies, namely mince and cheese to cream donuts. Kiwis love a good trip to their local bakery.

Get ready to tickle your taste buds and embrace the flavors of New Zealand. Stay tuned for more Kiwiana fun!
