Changes to AEWV

Changes to New Zealand's Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) & Residence Pathways

I'm sure you would have already heard that Immigration New Zealand announced some significant changes to the AEWV scheme, effective April 7th, 2024. These changes might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they're here nonetheless, impacting both migrants and employers.

So what exactly is all the fuss about?

  • Visa lengths for certain ANZSCO level 4 and 5 roles are getting reduced from 5 years max visa to a 3 year max visa, before a stand down period applies.

  • AEWV applicants are facing a higher bar with increased skill and experience requirements to apply for any skill level visa.

  • ANZSCO level 4 & 5 roles will now need to show that they meet certain English language requirements.

  • Employers will now have stricter obligations when it comes to hiring migrants.

Now, onto the residence pathway twists:

  • The additions to the Green List & Construction Sector Agreement delayed

  • The Work to Residence pathway for bus and truck drivers is closing its doors to new applicants.

These changes would have likely forced many migrants to rethink their plans and goals in terms of staying long term in New Zealand. It is now more important than ever to gain advice and assess if you have any pathways to New Zealand residency!
